Numerous Apps Support Profile Pictures by Your Contact List

Enhancing your contact list with photos is just another way developers are attempting to eliminate a visual void left by Apple.
Here is a short list of free and paid apps that will satisfy your visual needs.
Free Apps
Contact Plus
Requirements: Jailbroken iPhone/Cydia

Contact Plus was developed by Darek Powers. It is hosted by Sleepers.net, so make sure you have them installed in Cydia.
(Go to Sections –> Repositories –> Sleepers.net –> Install)
ContactFlow
Requirements: Jailbroken iPhone/Cydia

ContactFlow, developed by Fabien Foulon, may not fit into this list, but I did have to mention it for the unique coverflow function it integrates into your profile pictures.

Paid Apps
Cyntact
Requirements: Jailbroken iPhone/Cydia
Price: $1.00

This is the flagship App of the Cydia store, you can even say it is the first App that introduced the function. It was developed by Jay Freeman (saurik) who is best known for developing Cydia.
VisualContacts
Requirements: App Store
Price: $0.99

VisualContacts, by GRC, is the first App available for iPhones that have not been jailbroken. It has a few additional features, such as grouping and editing groups. You can download this from the AppStore.
Just got my first Iphone a few days ago. (3Gs)
Was very disappointed to find my contact pics were not in the contact list.
Searched all day and based partly on the review here I bought Visual Contacts. While it does automatically put the photos in an almost identical list which is a separate app it is not totaly integrated. I access my contacts from the main dialer and of course that list still does not have the pics. Plus, from VC there are 2 extra clicks used before it will dial. Total waste of a dollar. I suppose I will have to jaibreak the phone to get the integration I seek with one of the other apps listed here. My other concern is that apps like these will remove the visual voicemail icon from the dialer.

Sorry to hear VisualContacts was a disappointment for you. I have not personally used it since there were free alternatives for jailbroken iPhones. Contact Plus or Cyntact sound more like what you’re looking for.
I would suggest jailbreaking your iPhone, it only takes a few minutes, if you’re not on 3.1 it should be easy.

I’m not sure if these apps will remove the visual voicemail icon from the dialer. I don’t believe they would, but I cannot attest to that.
