Installous + iTunes: A Cat and Mouse Story

“Being Able to Sync Hacked Apps Through iTunes Has Been Thwarted”

Photobucket

Notice that you are not able to sync your hacked apps through iTunes. You’re not the only one. It turns out the Apple would not like you to be able to back up your hacked apps.

Photobucket

If you turn on the iTunes sync option, iTunes will proceed to erase your hacked apps. Keep the option set to OFF and sync your iPhone as usual. If you do lose your apps, just go to the Downloads Tab and reinstall them.

Until a workaround is discovered you can back up and restore your apps through AppBackup in Cydia.

App Review: Christmas with Weezer

Tap Tap to Weezer Versions of Popular Christmas Songs

Photobucket

Weezer has come to the iPhone in time for the holidays, unfortunately it has been given the Tap Tap treatment.

Photobucket

Tap Tap has always fallen short when it came to transcribing notes. It lacks the refined Guitar Hero or Rock Band feel where notes actually have some semblance of rhythm.

The place where Tap Tap excels is in it’s multi-player mode and it’s ability to acquire such talent as Weezer and Nine Inch Nails.

Photobucket

There are six songs remixed masterfully by Weezer:

O Come All Ye Faithful
We Wish You a Merry Christmas
Silent Night
Hark the Herald Angel Sings
O Holy Nigh
The First Noel

Along with two Bonus Tracks:

Pork and Beans
The Greatest Man That Ever Lived

Conclusion:
If you simply must have a Christmas album this year and do not want to shell out the extra dough for Sufjan Stevens, then this is the album to own.

The game play, although ineffably unrefined is still enjoyable when you are waiting for food with a friend. The magic will inevitably dwindle after the holidays, as will it’s price tag.

Death to AppShare: The Marty Janetty Story

The iPhone Barbershop

AppShare and Installous have parted ways in the same retrospective manner as the much maligned WWF rockers.

Back in the hay day of the World Wrestling Federation, the Rockers, comprised of a young, outspoken Shawn Michaels and talented Marty Janetty, won championships, created a large fan base and promoted a moral goodness that only the Hulkster himself could compete with. After weeks of friction between the two, Shawn Michaels decided that he could do it better on his own. Shawn Michaels, as most would know, grew into a wrestling legend and Marty Janetty disappeared into wrestling’s “Where Are They Now” files.

Fast forward 16 years later and the “search ‘n hack” tag team of AppShare and Installous have found themselves in the same bitter situation. The collaborative efforts of AppShare (which searched and downloaded hacked apps) and Installous (which installed them) have officially come to an end.

Photobucket

AppShare has been discontinued in favor of Installous which has acquired all features of AppShare, save for download site selection (to download ipa’s you are now limited to the Appulous server).

The dissolution of the relationship stems from the creator’s perception that AppShare had become nothing more than an overbloated and indistinguishable Safari viewer.

New Years Day Pwnade: iPhone 3G Unlock

“Diving into yellowsn0w”

The DevTeam unlocks the iPhone 3G to work on any carrier.

Meanwhile, on an apple-shaped island in the remote recesses of an uncharted, waterfront villa, Steve Jobs takes time away from his multitude of disease-curing creations to plot his latest reprise in response.

Upon hearing the news over their invasive, overpriced and over-bundled satellite, internet, tv and phone monitoring services, AT&T executives unceremoniously drop a load of coal down their neatly-pressed, flat-front, business trousers.

The cat and mouse game ensues into the new year.

Excerpt from DevTeam:

3G Unlock

We have been working hard on a few other things. The main one being the 3G unlock codenamed “yellowsn0w”. This is now completed and is currently being packaged into a user-friendly application with the simplicity that you see in QuickPwn or BootNeuter.

* The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.
* This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you.
* You can tell what version baseband you have by going to Settings->General->About->Modem Firmware
* The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone. It’ll be installable via Cydia and so it doesn’t matter if you have a Mac or PC.
* Please refrain from updating your baseband, regardless of what version you’re at. We’ll have complete directions on New Year’s Eve.
* We’ll stream a live demo of the unlock before Christmas (see the update at the end of this post)
